Because in older times (Like over a hudred years ago) sailors got it more than land based people due to the lack of fruit and vegetables in their diet.

Scurvy is the deficiency disease of vitamin C.
Lack of fresh food, ie vegetables and fruit, which contained Vitamin C and would have prevented scurvy.
Scurvy was the result of vitamin C deficiency. The British figured out that limes had vitamin C and gave them and lemons to their sailors, hence the nickname "Limey."
