This indicates low-iron anemia, and is a disorder called pica and they should go to the doctor and have their levels checked right away.

because they like mint one would assume. well maybe some people do it because they are mint heads, but in my experience (i have had anorexia/bulimia problems since age 13), mint has always been a nice appetite suppressant. not only does it open up the nostrils and free the airways, but it smells good too. plus, it shuts your stomach up for a little while at least. ive met many others who have used mint for this reason, so if you know someone whos a mint addict, its probably not for the taste but for the appetite suppression.
