Look up collateral circulation. The saphenous vein is a superficial vein, so it primarily works to cool/warm the body. It is fed by veins that are deeper in your leg, so when you remove the saphenous vein the other veins find a different path to go around (collateral circulation). Once this vein is removed (typically for Bypass surgery, but potentially for varicose vein treatment) the person's leg tends to be "fatter" or "swollen". Ironically, some medical sources indicate that the swelling subsides, but in practice I can tell you that is seldom the case. None the less, a fatter left, or right leg is better than a still heart.
