Diabetics need to be very careful when choosing their foods. Diabetic foods to eat should be low in carbohydrates and fat. High fiber and whole grain carbs can be eaten in moderation because these foods do not cause a surge in blood sugar levels. Whole grain breads and pastas can be substituted for while bread and pasta. Diabetics should avoid all simple sugars in candy, white sugar and desserts. A no calorie sweeter can be used to make desserts or to sweeten drinks. Low fat meats should replace red meats. Fish and chicken are good choices rather than beef or pork.

Butter isn't used in cooking, and oils should be used minimally. Fresh herbs and spices take the place of butter, sugar and salt.
