Recovery of the eye after a vitrectomy usually occurs during the first month following surgery but full recovery can take a few months time. During the recovery the patient is usually prescribed drops to prevent infection and inflammation of the eye. The gas used to fill the eye after surgery is naturally absorbed by the body and replaced by clear aqueous fluid the length of this process depends on the type of gas used in surgery but usually takes from two weeks to two months. While the gas bubble is present in the eye you may be instructed to keep your head in a specific position whilst sitting, laying down and sleeping to prevent complications. Vision is usually poor while the gas bubble is present in the eye and improves as the body replaces it with natural fluid.
