I had a triple bypass in July of 2009 at the VA hospital in Atlanta, GA. The surgery was performed by a Doctor from Emory Hospital and it all went very well. Due to the fact that my sternum was opened up, I experienced quite a bit of pain during the recovery which lasted for a about a month. The Doctor sent me home with plenty of pain medication and instructions to keep walking as much as possible, and to keep coughing in order to insure that my lungs remained clear. The coughing was the most painful part and they even provide you a pillow to "hug" tightly while coughing. It was a life saver! I traded my bed sleep for a recliner chair which was very helpful in getting up in the morning. I began to feel noticeably better after a few weeks, and now after a year has passed I feel better than ever. I now walk places which I would have never done before the surgery. I have spoken to several others who have had the same surgery and they say that they only had minimal pain or practically no pain such as I described to them. I do not regret having it done and would do it again if I had to.

Can you use a sunbed after triple bypass surgery?

It is not recommended to use a sunbed after triple bypass surgery due to the potential risks involved. Sunbeds emit ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can be harmful to the skin, especially during the healing process post-surgery. Additionally, some medications taken after bypass surgery can make the skin more sensitive to UV radiation. It is best to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice on when it is safe to use a sunbed after triple bypass surgery.

Why one someone need a triple bypass?

A person may need a triple bypass surgery due to severe coronary artery disease, where three major coronary arteries are blocked or narrowed, restricting blood flow to the heart. This condition can lead to chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, and increase the risk of heart attacks. Bypass surgery aims to improve blood flow by creating new pathways for blood to reach the heart muscle, thereby alleviating symptoms and enhancing overall heart function. It's often recommended when other treatments, such as medication or lifestyle changes, are insufficient.

What does triple by-pass mean?

Triple bypass surgery is a type of coronary artery bypass surgery, and is a surgical procedure performed to relieve angina (or vessel blockage due) and reduce the risk of death from coronary artery disease. Arteries or veins from elsewhere in the patient's body are grafted to the coronary arteries to bypass atherosclerotic narrowings and improve the blood supply to the coronary circulation supplying the myocardium (heart muscle). The terms single bypass, double bypass, triple bypass, quadruple bypass and quintuple bypass refer to the number of coronary arteries bypassed in the procedure. In other words, a double bypass means two coronary arteries are bypassed (e.g. the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery and right coronary artery (RCA)); a triple bypass means three vessels are bypassed (e.g. LAD, RCA, left circumflex artery (LCX)), and so on. Less commonly more than four coronary arteries may be bypassed.
