I will assume by "derby" you mean Kentucky Derby. In 1984 the winning horse in the Kentucky Derby was Swale, who was a son of Seattle Slew, the 1977 Triple Crown winner. Swale lost the Preakness, finishing 7th, but came back to win the Belmont Stakes 3 weeks later.
Derby is a city in the county of Derbyshire in the midlands of England. Derbyshire is landlocked. Travelling northwest from Derby you would eventually come to the Irish Sea.
The horse breeding was one. The Irish were famous for their "Irish Hunter" or "Irish Sport HOrse". I can't think of any others at the moment.
