The slaves had a very difficult journey. The conditions in which they stayed for 4 to 6 weeks were unbearable. The slave traders would cram as many slaves as they could on board the ship; in some cases the slaves hardly had enough room to breath never mind move. The voyage was usually a rough ride, some slaves were thrown about and badly injured, some wanted to die. The t'ween deck were stained with blood and mucus. 'The smell overpowered my nose' one slave said The slave traders tortured the slaves physically and sexually, also cutting off the arms and legs of other slaves to warn them if they misbehaved.
