Recovery comes after the detox, because it is still necessary to deal with the issues that caused the person to take enough to become addicted (as with any other drug, including alcohol). There are also personality and social changes that accompany addictions that must be dealt with. Otherwise, there is danger of relapse because of pressures that the recovering addict is not prepared to handle. These adjustments cannot be made while the person is still under the influence of drugs. That is why we say that recovery continues after cessation of use.
