Can you drink alcohol on clarithromycin?

I would NOT recommend drinking alcohol while on clarithromycin. There is a technical explanation of why, but basically it is because the alcohol can "mess up" the ability of the antibiotic to be converted into it's "active form" while in the liver (as alcohol is certainly present in the liver!). This active form is what really helps fight whatever infection you might have.

While drinking alcohol with clarithromycin might not have immediate life-threatening effects (like it might with another depressant drug), the effectiveness of the drug is reduced when alcohol is present, so it will be harder for your body to fight the infection.

Both Roxithromycin and alcohol are metabolized in the liver. To be absolutely safe, do not combine this medication with alcohol or other drugs, especially those metabolized in the liver. Roxithromycin's side effects include nausea, vomiting and dizziness, combining with alcohol may increase the prevalence of these unwanted side effects.
