The general consensus is yes, you can still drink alcohol with Ciprofloxacin. Indeed, there are only a few antibiotics that you should definitely not drink with. There is a long standing myth that drinking alcohol and taking anitbiotics is a lethal cocktail that can only lead to serious illness or and/or permanent liver damage. In the majority of cases this is simply not true. Drinking in moderation with Ciprofloxacin is not taboo and therefore is not prohibited. The longstanding myth about not mixing drink with antibiotics is mainly due to the fact that in years gone-by, doctors prohibited the mixing or the two simply to stop people getting drunk and forgetting to take the correct dose at the correct intervals or even forgetting to complete the course at altogether. As with all antibiotics it is imperative that the course is finished as prescribed. Also if you are in any further doubt , then it is always wise to consult your pharmacist at the point of your antibiotics being dispensed. Asking your GP the same question will probably not best please them as they will be dealing with patients on a daily basis who do have serious drink related illnesses. On that note they may well be wondering why you would want to drink for at all, especially when you are already poorly anyway.

I understand while this may not happen to everyone I would caution against drinking alcohol with Ciprofloxacin. In the paper given below it is only 12 male volunteers which i do not believe to be enough information to conduct a true scientific experiment. In my experience it has many of the same side effects as other antibiotics when mixed with alcohol. I am a woman and after drinking about half of what I would normally drink over a four hour time period I became ill. I had a headache, and was very dizzy and nauseous, shortly after I began to vomit everything, until there was nothing left. After vomiting I then became unresponsive and had shortness of breath. That is when the ambulance was called for me. I am not saying that this would happen to you but keep it in considertion and please be careful.

While antibiotics and alcohol are usually a bad combination, as far as I can tell Cipro itself does not interact with alcohol. In fact, here's a paper from 1994 which found exactly that:

I have not found a single reputable source that says you can't drink alcohol while taking Cipro.

HOWEVER: one thing that you need to be careful of, and which neither my doctor nor my pharmacist warned me about, is that you shouldn't drink coffee, tea, or other caffeinated beverages while taking Cipro. Cipro causes caffeine to accumulate in the body, resulting in magnified effects, and possibly overdose in the worst case. So just to be on the safe side, I would avoid caffeine.

Another thing which I was warned about is that you mustn't take antacids or vitamin/iron/mineral supplements while on Cipro. There is a certain window within which you can take these, which probably depends on your dosage, but I personally wouldn't risk it.

Social drinking of alcohol (fewer than 2 drinks a day) should not cause any side effects unless you already have a liver problem. However, drinking too much alcohol can cause the medicine to leave your body faster, which will decrease the effectiveness of the medicine. If you drink more than two drinks a day, you should tell your doctor so that different medicines can be prescribed.
