Tramadol (Ultram) can affect a chemical in the brain called serotonin. Lithium can also affect serotonin. Taking lithium along with tramadol (Ultram) might cause too much serotonin in the brain causing confusion, shivering, stiff muscles, and other side effects.

These drugs are contraindicated. Tramadol interacts with the SSRI antidepressants and makes it much more likely that you will develop a potentially fatal condition known as Seratonin Syndrome. This causes rapid heartbeat, sweating, tremors, muscle rigidity, confusion, hallucination, a rise in body temperature which can be fatal, hallucinations, and coma. You also have an increased risk of having a seizure.

Do not take tramadol with SSRI medications.
