Heparin may be used with a PICC line to maintain patency and prevent clot formation, especially in certain clinical situations. However, the necessity and dosage of heparin depend on the patient's condition and healthcare provider protocols. Some facilities may opt for saline flushes instead, particularly for short-term use. Always follow the specific guidelines provided by your healthcare institution.
Why not use the PICC for the blood draw?
There is not a PICC line with an inflated balloon for placement.

PICC line pain can be a serious indication of infection or inflammation. You need to visit your doctor or the ER.

A peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) can be used for blood sampling. The FDA has approved certain types of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC line) for power injections.
IF the pic line has been flushed with heparin , then the coagualtion studies cannot be drawn for the line. Heparin interfers with the APTT test. It will be extremely high or not even read on the analyzer. Also if there are nutrients going into the line and sodium, potassium, it is advisable not to use the pic line. Even if the is 10 cc of blood pulled first to "waste" there is the chance of residual elements in the line itself which will cause fale positive electolyte results as well as glucose and total protein, albumin. If the patient has veins that could be drawn from , it would be much better to get a true laboratory analysis.
