A very recent government study does indeed report that zinc sulfate is very effective at masking some drugs in urine, esp. amphetamines, cocaine and to a lesser extent marijuana. Here's the abstract as published on Medline Abstract Federal workplace drug testing was initiated during the late 1980s. Since then, numerous methods have been employed to subvert these drug tests, adulteration of urine samples being the most common. A wide variety of adulterants has been reported to date along with suitable methods of their detection. Recently, websites have claimed that zinc sulfate can be an effective adulterant to bypass drug testing. Herein, these claims are investigated using standard drug detection kits and urine samples adulterated with zinc. Drug-free urine samples were fortified with different amounts methamphetamines and benzoylecgonine, to which zinc sulfate was added to study its effect. Urine samples from acute marijuana smokers were also obtained in order to study the effects of zinc supplements on THC drug testing. All urine drug testing was performed using ELISA detection kits manufactured by Immunalysis. Both zinc sulfate and zinc supplements are effective in interfering with the detection of all three drugs by Immunalysis drug detection kits. Also, no suitable method could be established to detect zinc in urine samples. Zinc can be an effective adulterant in urine for some illicit drugs that are commonly screened under routine drug testing

What is the test for zinc ions?

A common test for zinc ions is to add sodium hydroxide solution to the sample. A white precipitate of zinc hydroxide forms. Additionally, zinc ions can also be detected using a flame test, where a blue-green flame color indicates the presence of zinc.

What property could he easily measure in the lab to help him determine whether the metal is pure zinc?

One property he could measure is the density of the metal. Pure zinc has a specific density, so comparing the measured density to the known value for pure zinc can help determine the metal's purity. He could also perform a chemical test, such as reacting the metal with acid to see if it produces characteristic reactions of zinc.

What happens when zinc is added to dilute sulfuric acid in a test tube?

When zinc is added to dilute sulfuric acid in a test tube, a chemical reaction occurs where zinc reacts with sulfuric acid to form zinc sulfate and hydrogen gas. This reaction is a redox reaction where zinc is oxidized to zinc ions, while hydrogen ions in the sulfuric acid are reduced to form hydrogen gas. The production of hydrogen gas can be observed as bubbles forming in the test tube.

If there are 5g of zinc in 75g of ointment what is the percentage of the drug in the ointment?

The percentage of zinc in the ointment can be calculated by dividing the weight of zinc (5g) by the total weight of the ointment (75g) and then multiplying by 100. In this case, the percentage of zinc in the ointment is 6.67%.

What properties could be used to help determine whether the sample is rreally zinc?

Some properties that could be used to help determine if a sample is really zinc include its density (7.14 g/cm3), melting point (419.5 °C), color (silvery blue), and reaction with acid (produces hydrogen gas). Conducting a flame test, where zinc emits a blue-green flame, can also be used to identify zinc.
