Testosterone is primarily produced and released by the Leydig cells in the testes in males, and in smaller amounts by the ovaries in females and the adrenal glands in both sexes. Its release is regulated by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland through a feedback loop involving luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). When testosterone levels drop, the hypothalamus releases gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), stimulating the pituitary to secrete LH, which in turn prompts the testes to produce more testosterone.
