Try asking them. Eyes may be bloodshot, they may smell of marijuana. They might act more motivated or active than normal or somewhat sedated. They may be a bit cheerier than usual. If they're depressed, their depression symptoms will be gone, etc. They'll sleep better, take more interest to what you say. They'll probably be a bit paranoid, so be nice to them, you're already murdering them inside by suspecting.
