I like using natural products as much as possible; for years I have used essential oil body sprays that I make both with and without adding alcohol. (When I do use alcohol, I use a natural grain alcohol that is designed for fragrances; even vodka can be used. Either of these is better than the wood alcohol that is used in most store bought products.) You can find a number of books on essential oils and using them, as well as finding information online. I will give you a few of my favorite spray recipes.
You can start with this basic recipe, which consists of 4 ounces of distilled water, and add 6 to 12 drops of an essential or fragrance oil. (You can use one scent or you can combine oils, as you prefer.) I buy therapeutic essential oils, I like using organic peppermint, rose, key lime… I don't mix these particular oils together; I use one scent as a standalone or I mix two or more complementing oils together.
I store my mixtures in either an amber or cobalt blue glass spray bottle. My basic spay calls for me adding 4 ounces of distilled water, with 3 tablespoons of glycerin, followed by adding 6 to 12 drops of essential oil depending on how strong of a scent I want. I like using peppermint oil; it reminds me of my grandmother, my childhood, and it gives me comfort. I spray it on my pillows at night, and I spray on my wrists, so that I can inhale the scent as I like.
Try this mixture as a cooling and refreshing spay to use after a bath or shower. In a 10 ounce amber glass bottle (with a spray apparatus), add 8 ounces of distilled water, 2 tablespoons of witch hazel, 6 to 8 drops of key lime essential oil, and 6 to 8 drops of cucumber essential oil; mix and spay as you wish.
You can even mix an essential oil with other oils, such as sweet almond, grape seed oil, peach kernel oil… There are many essential oils, with many different scent levels, that you can use alone or combined together. Some of these oils are chamomile, lavender, sandalwood, rosemary, bergamot, orange and many more, including those I listed above.
