Antibiotics are prescribed when you have a bacterial infection that your body cannot fight on its own, either because the infection is too bad, or you are to weak or unhealthy to fight it on your own. Antibiotics are a drug that kills bacteria. When you take antibiotics it helps your body to fight the bacteria that are present. Unfortunately, this means that both good and bad bacteria are killed.

Illnesses such as strep throat, bacterial pneumonia and skin infections are treated with antibiotics.

Illnessess such as colds and flu's are not treated with antibiotics because they are caused by viruses.

Physicians have their own guidelines and training regarding Best Practice of medicine. I am not a physician, but I am aware that antibiotics should be prescribed for patients only when they are medically indicated for the condition being treated. I hear the same stories that everyone hears about physicians who will prescribe them for patients who demand them, regardless of medical indication. This helps no one, and probably does more to foster the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

People who are prescribed antibiotics should take them exactly as they are instructed by the prescribing physicians, and usually this will include taking the entire prescription, regardless of when you start to feel better. Sometimes people will decide on their own to stop an antibiotic because they 'feel better', not realizing that by leaving some weakened but not killed bacteria around in their bodies, they are creating strains of the bug that will be more and more resistant to treatment if they take hold in other people.
