Yes actually some employers are using mouth swabs for drug testing (Example Krogers) A saliva test, blood test or a urine test can be done Someone has been watching too much "Law and Order"! Just kidding! A saliva swab can be used to cross check DNA, but a test like that is VERY expensive. For a regular drug test, they generally use urine. I had to take a salvia drug test, it was this little stick. And and the end of it was a sponge. You have to suck on the sponge for 3 minutes. When your done you close the cap and it will pop up bars that determine whether you test negative or positive for the drug. It test for opiates, thc, cocaine and methinfetimines.

Sorry to give you one of those DUH answers but they test for drug metabolites. They can test you for any and all drugs that could possibly be in your saliva, prescription or otherwise.

Federal government guidelines (by SAMHSA-the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) required testing for 5 specific categories of drugs (referred to as the "SAMHSA 5", previously called the "NIDA-5").

Cannabinoids- marijuana, hash

Cocaine- cocaine, crack, benzoylecognine

Amphetamines- amphetamines, methamphetamines, speed

Opiates- heroin, opium, codeine, morphine

PCP - phencyclidine

Also they can test for :

Hydrocodone (Lortab, Vicodin)

Methaqualone (Quaaludes)

Ethanol (Alcohol)

Methadone

Propoxyphene (Darvon compounds)

MDMA (Ecstasy)

Benzodiazepines (Valium, Xanax, Librium, Serax, Rohypnol)

In addition, there are a few other substances which it is possible but quite unusual to test for: LSD, etc..

You just got a very long list of all the drugs they COULD test for. In reality you're looking at a test that will check for the "five most common drugs of abuse." The SalivaScreen 5 checks for THC, cocaine, meth, opiates and benzodiazepines. The RapidScreen 6 checks for THC, cocaine, meth, opiates, amphetamines and PCP. The OraLine 4 checks for THC, cocaine, opiates and meth. The Salivaconfirm-saliva looks for cannabis, opiates, cocaine, amphetamines, methamphetamines, and benzodiazepines.

I think these will eventually be declared illegal because a LOT of the safeguards we have built into urinalysis and hair testing don't exist in saliva tests. To be specific, you can't confirm a positive result with the original sample. In urinalysis, if you get a positive on your screening test you can send it to a lab with a GC/MS for a confirmation test. In hair testing you wash the second half of the hair and test both the wash water and the hair. But with saliva testing even if you saved the swab you wouldn't have enough material to do anything but another saliva test. But oh, these are cheap and non-intrusive and they're good enough to tell someone they can't have the only job left in town...
