From what I believe, BC pills contain progestin (which is a synthetic version of progesterone.) During a regular cycle progesterone is released during ovulation and continues in higher doses during pregnancy. The progesterone is the hormone responsible for building the uterus up so that the fertilized egg has a healthy spot to implant. When a body feels that the progesterone is high it assumes it is because implantation has occurred and therefore does not release another egg. So BC pills trick your body into not releasing the eggs from the ovaries by hormone manipulation. That is why it is so important to take the pills as scheduled and not miss any doses.

Birth control helps people avoid pregnancy. There are a number of methods that protect against pregnancy in different ways. Sterilization methods, like a vasectomy, are usually surgical and irreversible.
