How long before the tooth pain subsides when taking amoxicillan?

It usually takes a few days for the infection to be reduced and the pain to go away.

Note: If placed on Amoxicillin as a preventive measure due to wisdom teeth removal (dentists usually prescribe a short course of antibiotics for most patients in case of any infections after the procedure), the general pain felt due to the surgery will also subside within 2 to 3 days, given no infection. Should there be an infection and no antibiotics given beforehand, you will most likely be prescribed Amoxicillin and it may take 3-5 days for the swelling and discomfort to completely go away.

From my experiences, If the infection seemed intolerable, I asked for the shot in addition to the course of pill treatment. Usually by that next day I felt better but take the whole course of treatment your doctor gives you.

Amoxicillin is an antibiotic, not a pain killer. It is likely that it was given to kill the infection that caused the problem to begin with. I just had a script filled today after a tooth extraction and the Dentist said within 36 hours the Amoxicillin should kick in and I should be able to get off the pain meds and the swelling should well down if not gone by then.... until then keep up with the pain killlers and ice compresses!

Your doctor will give you pain killers along with the Amoxicillin. He may give injection of analgesic drug. You will get pain relief in reasonable time. It depends on many other factors.
