It stays in the folicle until it grows into a strand of hair. Short answer- how fast does your hair grow? Because the evidence will be there until you cut it off. How about this? Get a bunch of nair and rub it all over your head and leave it on until your scalp bleeds.

The real answer is two months.

How it works: Hair usually grows at the rate of 3/4 to 1 inch per month. Say yours grows at the 3/4 inch rate. Drug testing is conducted on the most recent 1-1/2 inch of hair--if your hair is six inches long, they'll take a sample from your head, then cut off all but the 1-1/2" closest to your scalp before testing it. So...if you smoke today, two months from now that pot will be out past the 1-1/2" limit.

Having said that, if you have smoked two months ago and you know you're going to have to get a hair drug test tomorrow, go down and get your hair cut to 1-1/2" today just to keep them honest.

Aprox. 7 years. Or long enough for every single hair on your head to fall out, and re grow. But don't worry about a hair test, they're rare and are barley used. Most common tests are urin, and saliva.
