12,000

I don't know where the number 12,000 arose from, but I was unable to locate it or any general medical reviews citing a number of deaths arising directly from the use of flunitrazepam/rohypnol.

While I can't provide an exact number, there are some general concepts that have been scientifically gathered that I will provide.

A Swedish study showed rohypnol to be a major medication used in suicide via prescription medications.

Obviously, rohypnol is the popularly known as the "date rape drug" but is actually found in the blood and urine of 0.33-1% of victims. Other benzodiazepines account for a greater number of date rape related incidents.

In the United States, I would project the number of rohypnol deaths to be lower than 12,000 because of the popularity of other major benzodiazepines (diazepam, alprazolam, midazolam, lorazepam) and the false presentation as the main date rape drug. Hope this helps you a little bit.
