Trazodone is a anti-depressant first. It works by increasing the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain, BUT Trazodone is most commonly ordered for sleep now since somnolence is such a common side effect. This is mentioned because all of these things effect dosing, as does weight, age, and other medications that you take. For sleep the average starting dose is 25-50mg for an adult at bedtime. You can increase this dosage by 25mg up to 300-350mg max. total dosage. Those ending doses mentioned are very high, a common dose for depression is 150mg per day in divided doses. Most commonly Trazodone is given to patients with a substance abuse history because it is not habit-forming itself, and other hypnotic-type sleep medications could be dangerous. Please take these dosage recommendations as just that, making dosage changes without a physician is not a good idea.

Overdosing on trazodone is difficult. If a person ingests a bottle of trazodone, usually their body will take care of itself and automatically vomit it up within 60 minutes. Trazodone does not easily lead to organ failures as does common overdose medications like Tylenol. It's easier to OD on Tylenol than on trazodone. My personal experience on trazodone is when I've taken pills at a slower rate so as not to throw up, then I feel groggy, incoherent, and confused and lose track of what it was I was doing so I forget or don't care to take any more. I'm sure where there is a will there is a way to kill yourself on it, but the usual dose is about 150mg a day, notice "mg", and to die from an OD it takes something like 600 grams, notice, grams. I'm talking lethal doses, not just a typical overdose that leads to the OD side effects like seizures, which in that case, varies greatly depending on each individual's own body chemistry and physical make up. Personally, I have been on it for years and have a high tolerance to trazodone, so for me to OD on it would be a miracle, even when I've mixed it with brandy and tequila. Side note, OD on trazodone makes a person feel incredibly crappy and have massive nerve/muscle pain (I've experienced this), along with a plethora of undesirable side effects. The person does not simply "gently fall asleep" quite the opposite. It's painful, traumatic, and horrifying, as least it was for me. When I took 300 mg trazodone with 4 shots of 80 proof brandy, that did me in. Long story short, my body started reacting at 30 minutes after ingestion, had 30 minutes of pure hell (felt like hours), then at 60 minutes after ingestion vomited, felt much better but then passed out, then was watched all night to make sure my shallow breathing continued. Apparently I'm still here right? To those of you who want to kill yourself, it is an option, but not the only option. You have more options than dying. Living is hard for me too, but please find something to live for. ODing on trazodone is not the way out, in fact it totally sucks. And if you are looking up methods of OD for research or just for fun, be careful who you spread OD info too because many more people out there would rather be dead than alive and we just keep living because we haven't figured out a good way to die yet, or we are hoping we will die of natural causes so we don't go to hell (some believe this, some don't) or have the stigma of suicide left for our loved ones to deal with. The serious ones rarely if ever tell others that we relate more to a grave than to life, at least in words.
