Hello

Probably as they are a similar drug. However you would still have to take consider the total dose, more so with the Ativan. You could not take a huge dose of ativan and a huge dose of diazepam as they would add together to make a humongous and dangerous dose. Ativan has very little purpose. It's action is very short, so it can be used as a pre-operation sedative to calm the patient before an operation, and he/she will quickly be alert when the op is over and the cause for anxiety is gone. However the short action makes it EXTREMELY addictive. Withdrawal can be very unpleasant indeed after only 3-4 days use. Diazepam has a much longer half-life which makes it LESS addictive (not non-addictive) and one dose will usually last comfortably until the next dose, so less temptation to take it more often than prescribed and tends to give uninterrupted tranquilisation. I write as a very experienced user of diazepam for a neurological condition, and, a long time ago, ativan, not as a doctor or pharmacist. When you start to need more for the same effect, this is a sign to stop or reduce the dose, possibly temporarily, not to take more.
