Elavil is a tricyclic antidepressant or TCA. It is not in the same class as barbituates. Interestingly, Flexeril (Cyclobenzaprine), a widely prescribed muscle relaxer, is structurally similar to TCAs like Elavil (Amitriptyline)

No. While both act on the GABA system they are very different medications and act on different receptors.

And I'll add that Neurontin (gabapentin) is most closely related to the controlled substance Lyrica (pregabalin), which can be for some people as addictive as a barbiturate. But they are very different types of drugs. All have been used to treat seizure disorders, but while barbiturates are synthetic hypnotic sedatives and are dangerously addictive, drugs such as Neurontin and Lyrica are another type of anti-convulsant that are still being researched in the ways they act upon the brain.
