Self-Medication is when the patient tries taking different things instead of seeing a doctor. One common way people self-medicate is by using alcohol or drugs (tobacco counts as a drug). The reason that self-medication is not a good idea is that the patient is almost never a medical doctor, and does not really understand what is harmful to the body! Drugs and alcohol might make you feel better for a little while, but they are habit-forming, and pretty soon you don't just feel bad, but are a drug addict or alcoholic on top of that!

When you begin using illicit drugs for recreational purposes, you will use more and want to be intoxicated more often.
Drug AbuseA drug is anything that chemically influences the body, This can be Alcohol, illegal drugs, stimulants (such as red bull/caffeine), or cigarettes (tobacco) etc... When you overuse any of these products your body becomes dependent on them ad this creates a 'drug abuse' situation.
