Reye's Syndrome is associated with the use of aspirin or salicylate-containing products. See Related Links.
Reye's Syndrome
Reye syndrome can be almost completely prevented by parental awareness of the dangers of administering any aspirin-containing substances to their children.

Apparently the cause of Reye's Syndrome is not known or understood. BUT there has been an associative link found between the occurrence of the disease and the use of aspirin. That link is strong enough to indicate that children under the age of 19 years should not take aspirin or use oral or topical products that contain salicylates.See Related Links.
Reye's syndrome is an emergency illness chiefly affecting children and teenagers. It almost always follows a viral illness such as a cold, the flu, or chicken pox. Reye's syndrome may affect all the organs of the body, but most seriously affects the brain and liver. Rapid development of severe neurological symptoms, including lethargy, confusion, seizures, and coma, make Reye's syndrome a life-threatening emergency. Reye's syndrome is a rare illness, even rarer now than when first described in the early 1970s. The incidence of the disorder peaked in 1980, with 555 cases reported. The number of cases declined rapidly thereafter due to decreased use of aspirin compounds for childhood fever, an important risk factor for Reye's syndrome development. Because of its rarity, it is often misdiagnosed as encephalitis, meningitis, Diabetes, or poisoning, and the true incidence may be higher than the number of reported cases indicates. (I just copied this off of the question "What is reye syndrome?", but it means the same thing. Thanx 2 whoever wrote that!)

The liver also degenerates. This condition causes children who have had the chickenpox or a flu like illness that is caused by taking medications containing aspirin. A child with Reye syndrome usually become unusually quiet, lethargic, sleepy, and have vomiting. Is it progresses ethargy deepens and the child become confused, combative and delirious. Reye syndrome can cause death.
Reye's syndrome is a rare but serious condition that primarily affects children and teenagers recovering from viral infections, particularly influenza and chickenpox. The incidence of Reye's syndrome has significantly decreased since the 1980s, largely due to public health campaigns warning against the use of aspirin in young patients. Currently, it is estimated that there are about 1 to 3 cases per million children per year in the United States. Due to its rarity, overall annual cases are low, often reported as fewer than 100 cases in the country.
