If you mean barbiturates; they act as depressants for the central nervous system and are used as sedatives or hypnotics, suppression of anxiety, the induction of sleep, and the control of seizures. Some types, when injected intravenously, produce a general anesthesia.

These drugs act by suppressing the excitability of all tissues. (Not all tissues are not equally sensitive).

Barbiturates are dangerous when combined with Alcoholic Beverages. Low dosages induce drowsiness, and high dosages coma and death. The prolonged use of these drugs results in agitation, insomnia, *confusional psychosis. Seizures may occur within 24 to 36 hours of withdrawal. It is habit forming and has addictive properties. Also, one of its effects is to interfere with the ability to perform complex skills.
