According to the Columbia University Health Services website (see the Related Question below) THC (the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana) can remain in the body's organs and fatty tissues forever. Unlike most other drugs, THC is fat-soluble, and is stored in your fat cells, which is why drinking water does not help remove it from your system: fatty substances do not dissolve in water.

However, even though marijuana can stay in your system forever, it is not detectable in a drug test forever. For daily smokers, it usually takes 2 to 6 weeks, or a month on average, before you can give a clean urine sample.

For extremely, extremely heavy users who are also very overweight, it could possibly take over two months. But normally, people who smoke every day will be able to give a clean urine sample in about a month.

For occasional users -- people who use marijuana only once or twice a week or less -- the timeframe is shorter, more like 2 weeks to one month.
