Fentanyl lozenges are on a stick, much like a lollipop and should be placed between the teeth and gums to release the medication through the tissue in the mouth and into the blood stream. Fentanyl is known for how quickly it works, how effective it is, and how quickly it "leaves your system". These qualities make it a good medication for breakthough pain management if someone feels that other opiods make them feel drugged, over-medicated, and sleepy. It is also useful when a provider is trying to find the right dosage of long acting medication, thus reducing the need for break through medications.
