Will robitussin make you fail a drug test?

Any current drug may show up during lab testing. Specific tests of blood or urine are only testing for certain things ... those tests usually ignore the things that the tests are not looking for.

personally i dont think so. I know it can be tested for but they speciffly have to test for it. I mean if your getting drug tested for lets say u got cought smoking weed. THen they we'll mainly test u for thc. But i cant say for sure it doesnt BUTT i mean its cough syrup and legall what are they gonna say?

It depends on the kind of drug screen being performed.

1. If the Robitussin is the regular (over-the-counter) kind, it will only show positive if the drug screen is testing for ALCOHOL. Some drug screens now test for a metabolite of alcohol called Ethinyl Glucoronide (EtG). If the drug testing authority is concerned about your use of alcohol, this will constitute a "non-negative" test, but still must undergo confirmatory testing to truly be called a "presumptive positive". Under appropriate circumstances, the "presumptive positive" test for EtG must be submitted for confirmatory testing with more advanced testing methods. If the "non-negative" test for alcohol is confirmed after the Medical Review Officer process, one may be called "POSITIVE" for alcohol.

2. If the Robitussin is of the prescription variety (that contains codeine), the screen may show that the urine is "non-negative" for codeine/morphine. Once the confirmation process is complete, the MRO (medical review officer) may contact the donor to see if there is a legitimate prescription for Robitussin AC (Robitussin with codeine). If there is a legitimate prescription, the donor should be declared to be "NEGATIVE" for codeine/morphine. If there is not a legitimate prescription, the MRO is expected to examine the donor for any visible evidence of opioid abuse (track marks, etc.). Barring any evidence of the sort, the MRO should call the test "NEGATIVE".

Realistically, however, may drug screens are called "POSITIVE" without undergoing the appropriate steps. If one has been declared "Positive" without appropriate medical review, this constitutes a legitimate avenue for challenging the results of the drug testing process.
