They will go into severe withdrawal. Methadone is one of the strongest and longest acting synthetic opiates on the market. It gets stored deep in the fatty tissue and bones so will take a long time to clear out of a persons system. The withdrawal from methadone is long and painful if not tapered off slowly. Some people can die from methadone withdrawal if they are already sick and weak from another illness because of the shock to the body. Taking someone off methadone abruptly is not recommended at all and can be dangerous to that individual. It is best to have a doctor monitor a detox of methadone slowly over time to avoid any complications.
