Herbal medicine is the use of plants or their parts to aid the body to heal. Some say that herbal medicine is used instead of drugs, but this is not quite correct, because most herbalists (that I know) do not use herbs to replace drugs. Often drugs seem to be prescribed to ameliorate symptoms (i.e. anti-inflammatories for inflammation) whereas the philosophy/approach of herbalism is to address "what caused that?", rather than simply (only) addressing the symptoms. Diet and lifestyle are also usually addressed in herbal medicine.

Sometimes Traditional Chinese Medicine is referred to as herbal medicine, but it should be noted that while herbs are part of it, there is also the use of animals or their parts.
