There are two ways to interpret this question. One is, what is the herbal chemical equivalent, and one, more general, what herbs can help, relax, tranqulize like Valium.

First off a minor tranquilizer relaxes by relaxing the muscles. In other words it helps ease up tense muscles. That being said, there are different categories of herbals that can relax. There are calmatives. These botanical are calming hence the name. There are nervines. These strengthen the nerves. Another category is antispasmodic. While these arn't exactly relaxing herbs they help calm cramping. In this way they help with stomach distress and thereby they are helpful in dealing with physical stress. Finally there are relaxants. Medicinal plants that are most helpful in making people feel relaxed. Scullcap, Wood Betony, Passionflower and Valarian are excellent relaxing herbs for most people.

Some herbs, including chamomile, sage, lemon balm, and holy basil, are also relaxing, but have markedly milder or weaker effects than valium, and accordingly, are much safer.

There is no herbal medicine that is an exact equivalent to Xanax or the Benzodiazepines, the family of drugs to which Xanax belongs. However, there have been some herbal medicines which are used to treat anxiety, the main use for which Xanax is prescribed. These include:

• Valerian root is used as a sedative. There is more scientific evidence supporting Valerian's use for insomnia than for anxiety.

• If anxiety is attributed to chronic irrational fear, Chinese medical practitioners will often prescribe a Kidney Yang tonic. If the anxiety is due to chronic stress, herbs to soothe the Liver are utilized. Answer-Valerian Root works really well, I take it sometimes and it helps a lot. It's not as strong as xanax but for me it works better for stress and helps me to sleep.

I would add that Passionflower extract is reputed to help with anxiety. It can also be used (along with valerian root and/or melatonin) as a gentle and effective sleep aid, when initiating sleep is difficult because of anxiety.

Additionally, L-theanine can sometimes "take the edge off" of anxiety, especially when anxiety is contributed to by excessive caffeine intake.
