Learning, for example, is a basic value. People can learn with or without institutions. Learning can be institutionalized and turned into a commodity. As a commodity, it can be standardized, managed, monitored, and/or sold by an institution - i.e. schools. Health is another basic value, which can be institutionalized (and turned into a commodity) by hospitals, pharmacies, and insurance companies. By doing this, institutions claim to be the "source" of basic values.

Catholic Hospitals are typically owned and managed by religious orders, but in some cases the hospital may be managed by a third party. In some cases the hospital is sold to a secular organization that chooses to keep the original Catholic name. So what makes them Catholic? In the United States the practice of medicine is controlled and overseen by States boards of health and states hospital licensing boards. These oversight groups typically expect all hospitals to give the same standard of care and to abide by all anti discrimination laws. Therefor there is very little that is different due to the practicing of medicine. Some medical procedures, such as abortions, that are against Catholic teachings are not typically performed at Catholic hospitals. Another factor is that there is a spiritual side to the hospitals care. Priests, and other religious are mroe frequently present and available in Catholic hospitals.
