Try vinegar - it's cheap and non-toxic. I clean pots and kettles with it all the time. Pour half a cup into the toilet bowl and swish it around with the brush. Wait 10 minutes and swish again. It may take longer to dissolve heavy buildup. You may have to do the "swich procedure" several times.
