If there is swelling and pain associated with tooth extraction, the best medication to take would be a class of drugs known as N.S.A.I.D. or "Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs. NSAID's do not contain steroids, are non narcotic (which means non habit forming unlike pain drugs that ARE narcotic and habit forming like Darvocet, Vicodin, Percocet, and Oxycontin etc.) NSAID's work by interfering with the synthesis of prostaglandins, meaning NSAID's stop swelling, pain and fever. "Prostaglandins" are one of the many things that protect your body when trauma occurs, by triggering pain and swelling in the muscle tissue where the trauma occurred. A basic OTC (over the counter) list of NSAID's are as follows;
