The excimer laser was originally used to ablate silicon in the creation of microprocessors. Steve Trokel first tested the laser on human corneas and saw that it was effective at ablating tissue with extreme precision (a quarter micron per pulse with no collateral damage).

The first PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) procedure was performed in the United States by Marguerite Macdonald M.D. PRK is an excimer laser treatment to the surface of the cornea. The LASIK procedure in its current form (lifting a flap and doing laser sculpting underneath it) can be most directly attributed to Ioannis Pallikaris M.D. as he was the first to perform it on a human eye.
