People snort different things for different reasons. The most apparent reason is to get high. If you snort a time-released pill that is intended to be ingested orally, the initial onset is more intense. For example, if you snort a time-released Ritalin (used to treat ADD and ADHD) intended to last for eight hours, you will get the full eight hours worth of Ritalin all at once. Oftentimes it doesn't last as long as if the pill were to be ingested orally. Also, most pills, even if they aren't time-released, take about 10-15 minutes to kick in. When snorted, the medication beings working immediately as it is absorbed into your bloodstream via your lungs rather than waiting to be digested and absorbed from the intestines. Also, some people enjoy the rush of snorting. I personally wouldn't recommend it. Once you start it becomes quite difficult to stop.

Some of the above is correct, especially about onset times, but the method of action is mistaken. When you snort a substance it first sticks to the moist mucus membranes within the sinus cavity, where it immediately enters the bloodstream. Only a very tiny amount would actually travel all the way into the lungs, but minute quantities can possibly cross into the bloodstream through the lungs.

Instead the majority of the snorted substance remains in the sinus cavity until it "drips" down into the back of the throat. From the throat it goes into the stomach, which still does most of the work. Except once the substance enters the digestive system, the increased surface area of a powder vs. a pill means that it is dissolved and absorbed much faster.

Crushing and swallowing a pill, for example by placing the powder into a small piece of toilet paper or dumping it down your throat ala Goody's Headache Powder, will also result in a much faster and more intense onset than swallowing a whole pill, with the same decreased duration of effect. It will only take a minute or two longer to "kick in", but you won't have to worry about the burning sensation in your sinuses or damage to the structures of your nose.

Note: That short term "high" is not worth the downfalls to your health, over time (as you get older) causes you to have more bone loss, vision deteriorates faster than a person did not use it, etc. Besides the fact it is illegal

because cocaine releases dopamine, and snorting is one of the fastest ways to get cocaine into your blood stream. The faster it gets into your blood stream the more of a rush you will feel. Injecting is the fastest of course because you are sending the cocaine directly into your blood stream, but messing with needles is a line that most people do not want to cross.

Plus, since cocaine is not only a stimulant that creates a sudden rush of energy and euphoria when snorted, but it is also a topical anesthetic. This will at the very least make your nose go numb. With higher quality cocaine your entire face will go numb.

You could ingest it orally and still get extra energy and slight euphoria, but that kind of defeats the purpose. The main reason people snort cocaine is for the rush of energy and euphoria.

In some cases, cocaine has tiny shards of glass in it. With this, the glass will cut the inside of your nose, therefore the drug will get to your blood quicker.

Because for the most part, they believe that pill will give them some sort of high. Snorting is also a relatively quick way to get some drugs into the system.
