Sir Alexander Fleming noticed that some cultivated bacteria had been affected by a windblown mould. he threw them away at first but retrieved them from the bin to show a visitor. So it was a very chancy discovery. The right mould spore had to land in the right dish and the right visitor had to come at the right time. A million to one chance maybe.
