The official word on Saltpeter or potassium nitrate (KNO3), more commonly employed as an ingredient in gunpowder, has no therapeutic value as an anaphrodisiac, contrary to legend. Saltpeter can cause relaxation of involuntary muscle fiber (for which reason it's used to treat asthma) and it's occasionally prescribed to lower body temperature in cases of fever. Among other things potassium nitrate can cause gastroenteritis (violent stomachache), high blood pressure, anemia, kidney disease, and general weakness and torpor. It also has an alarmingly depressive effect on the heart. Too strong a dose and not only would you not be able to get it up, chances are you wouldn't be able to get up, period. All in all, there's still no substitute for the cold shower.

As to an other individuals answer regarding gunpowder, it is NOT a rumor that saltpeter is/was used in gunpowder. I am the descendant of a man named PHELPS, who was part of a group of men who owned Mammoth Caves in Kentucky, but being mostly trappers and hunters, sold out, leaving one man as owner. Those caves are abundant in saltpeter, which was sold during the Civil war to make gunpowder. The man that remained owner of the cave made a good bundle during that time, however, saltpeter was too much trouble to mine, especially to the adventurous pioneers which were my ancestors, so it soon became just another cave.

Saltpeter is stilled used in explosives, particularly fireworks, as it acts as an oxidizer. In Kentucky, it is still used by some women to "tame' their man, mostly hidden in their mashed potatoes. Cook for yourselves, gentlemen, if you have any fears!
