Black Elk was a medicine man and warrior with the Oglala Sioux. He witnessed the battle at Little Big Horn as a boy and fought in battles until Wounded Knee in 1890.

The book "Black Elk Speaks" was written in the early 1930's by John G. Neihardt based on discussions with Black Elk himself. It tells of Black Elk's vision, his ideas on the meaning of life, and the history of his people.

Like many books written from first hand discussions with people who really were there, it feels like a direct transmission of knowledge rather than a dry academic review of facts.
