Strictly speaking no. Alchemy, the father of Chemistry, is actually deeply rooted in Hellenistic (Greek influenced Egypt from the 4 century BC onward) Science and many scientific discoveries and techniques were first developed by alchemists, including distilation, analysis, and synthesis of new substances. Witchcraft on the other hand is a form of devination rising from pagan and neo pagan influences. Where people get confused is that both Alchemy and witchcraft both come from pagan sources and were in vogue during Medival times. The difference is that Alchemy was practiced by very well educated men and witchcraft by female outcasts of little or no education.
2. Those who dabble in "alchemy" today, on the other hand, are usually ill-educated folks who believe they will gain some power from their activities.

Many of the people executed at Salem as witches did have childred. Some were also grandparents and great-grandparents. In general, those accused as witches were just normal, middle-aged people and normal middle-aged people back then had children and possibly grandchildren.
Puritans believed in witches because witches were mentioned in the Bible. They believed these creatures were in league with the Devil, and could masquerade as normal around people. People were very superstitious and gullible. They blamed witches for all the bad things that happened in life. As a result of these beliefs, the Salem Witch Trials occurred.

Sadly, no. As much as we may wish for Alices, midget alchemists, or magical shops owned by alcoholic witches to exist, they are not real. But that's what fanfiction is for.
