The division of Germany and also Berlin was a result of the Occupation of German at the end of WW2. As part of the surrender, the 4 countries of the Allied powers took control of Germany. Russia wanted to divide the country into sectors so they were in control of one sector. The British, French and US controlled the remainder of German under one sectors.
