Nuns were mostly under a vow of poverty, which meant that technically, they were not allowed to own anything except their clothes.

Anyone who has had a lot of pets, however, knows that a human does not own a pet, the pet owns the human. So clearly, nuns could have pets in such a way. I once knew a nun who tended a wild sparrow that needed some help, and the sparrow never went away after that, though it continued to live outdoors; I would say she had a pet, but didn't own it.
