There is an unconfirmed story about the "discovery" of ancient Egyptian coins bearing the image and name of the Biblical Joseph. The discovery was apparently made in a large quantity of material stored "carelessly" in the vaults of the Museum of Egypt.

There are many problems with this story, not least the fact that the story has only appeared in Egyptian newspapers, not in any scientific journal or report; there is no evidence anywhere else for the use of coins in Egypt at that time, so this must be viewed with great caution; the utterly chaotic state of the museum's archives does not inspire confidence in any claims they may make, nor do they have a reputation for using scientific and sound judgements.

The whole affair may turn out to be a hoax.
