Tourism is a modern idea and something that has recently developed. To be a tourist means that you have the time and the resources to spend on doing nothing. This hasn't always been true in history. Most of history is about people trying to stay alive, to grow food, to find shelter, to protect families and to survive When the world was full of hunter and gathers they were not looking for a fun, but food. The Egyptians the Greeks, the other ancient societies did trade with other places, but this was not tourism. As the Romans spread out they were not looking for Stonehenge, but to conquer and claim land and as the world moved toward the period of the middle ages and the fall of Rome it was still a time to try to survive. Most people didn't have the time or means to travel. Travel was hard since it was by food, horse, or boat. To go 30 miles by horse would mean a 6 day round trip since a horse could only travel 10 miles a day. Real travel began in the 1800's when Europeans and English, who were wealthy, would visit places like Venice, Rome, Stonehenge, and Egypt, but by this time the train had been invented, steam ships, and even early cars began to appear which made travel faster and safer. More and more people began to travel to see sites as travel got better and people had the time or money to do it. Even today only about 10% of the population have passports, so travel overseas still isn't a major item for people. More travel to see grandma or to go to a football game than really travel to site see.
