ergot
I think you're referring to the theory that the affliction was caused by the fungus Ergot that does have hallucinginc qualities. The Ergot was ingested accidentally along with wheat or rye, not taken deliberatly.
Claviceps purpurea. However, it has not been proven that Ergot caused the Salem witch panic afflictions. It is only a theory.
There were no witches in Salem. And the accused were not the ones who have a theory about poison. The accussers are believed by some to have gone crazy because of Ergotism, poisoning by ingesting Ergot fungus, that grows on wheat and rye.
1. The accused were not the ones who went mad. The supposedly bewitched accusers went mad. 2. There is no concrete proof there was any poison, but one theory suggests Ergotism, poisoning from ingesting ergot fungus.

I'm assuming that you are asking about a theory that blames something the accusers ate on the affliction that lead them to accuse. If I've interpreted wrong, say so. There is a theory that the affliction that lead to the accusations was caused by ergot poisoning. Ergot is a fungus that grows on rye and is the original source of LSD. Conditions in Salem in 1691-92 suggest that ergot may have grown on the rye that the people of Salem consumed and the accusers were affected hallucinogenic nature, leading them to believe there were witches.
In the context of the Salem witch panic, maybe. The hallucinogenic effects of ergot, a fungus that grows on rye, barley and other wheat crops does match up with many of the symptoms of witchcraft in Salem. But, the distribution pattern of the afflictions doesn't match up with how ergot poisoning would reasonably appear. The afflictions were sporadically spread throughout Salem, but ergot is likely to affect whole households and not just scattered persons. Put simply, one would expect that more people from the same households would be affected by ergot because they would have all eaten from the same bag of possibly infected grain. To shorten this, ergot is plausible in terms of symptoms, but a shaky theory in regards to other details.
1. There were no witches in Salem 2. They were never accused of/ believed to have ingested poison 3. The only mention of poisoning in Salem literature is the theory that the afflicted got that way from Ergotism, poisoning by eating wheat or rye infected with the fungus Ergot.

Ergotism is a condition caused by the ergot fungus. This grows on grains and causes hallucinations, convulsion, paranoia, and mania. Before people had the technology to store most food safely, stored grain would be contaminated by this fungus, and everyone who ate it would get sick without knowing why.In 1976 Linda Caporael published an article in Science magazine which speculated that the Salem witch trials were actually due to ergot poisoning in the village. The symptoms that the Salem villagers described as being the result of witchcraft were some of the same symptoms that you get from eating ergot.
it started in 1692 some teenage girls ate rye bread that has a poison in it called ergot. the girls were "bewitched" which has symptoms of convulstions, tingly fingers, and halusinations (sp?). ergot poisoning causes halusinations, convulsions and it constricts arteries and you loose blood flow to the extremities (fingers and toes). and, the power of suggestion caused all of Salem to freakk out.
