An ancient scribe in the Dark Ages would typically be a holy monk. He would spend hours copying by hand books like The Bible, historical documents, and quite often would memorize large parts of books so they could be copied faster.

If he messed up, he started the page over. Many only would use one side of a page because they feared starting over because of a mistake.

In any other ancient time or place, they did copy books sometimes, but usually were servants who wrote down what the master said, recorded legal trials, or were sent to study a subject and bring back a report for someone who wanted to learn it.
